Great article and I am looking forward to your book. Please make it available somewhere besides Amazon. I agree with you on more that was lost than simply what the early writers covered. In addition to my own research, what you have been reporting, has reinforced that. In regard to the racial issue, I note something no one wants to talk about these days. Tribal Equatorial Africans sold into slavery by their fellow Africans left a primitive bronze age culture based on hunting, gathering, and very primitive farming, to arrive into a foreign culture that was well into the industrial revolution. Of course they were seen as inferior. They were. Not inherently as humans, as history has shown that individuals not only adapted and learned new skills, but based on situation. This is not remedied by passing laws or fantasy land moral platitudes. It takes generations of experiences and hard work. Not everyone moves at the same pace. This is why the South was so dedicated to gradual compensated Emancipation. Also why the North was dedicated to the chaos of a slave insurrection. Jubal Early summed it up well. “You can no more legislate a free man a slave than you can legislate a slave a free man.”
