THE CONVENIENT LIE
They throw the Cornerstone Speech at me ten times a day.
Every time, I say the same thing. Look at the calendar.
March 2, 1861. Congress passed the Corwin Amendment. Slavery protected permanently in the Constitution. Forever. Beyond the reach of any future amendment.
March 4, 1861. Abraham Lincoln endorsed it in his inaugural address.
March 21, 1861. Stephens gave the Cornerstone Speech. Nineteen days later.
If the Union went to war to destroy slavery, why did it offer to protect it forever nineteen days before that speech? If the Confederate cause was purely about slavery, why didn't that offer end the crisis?
Because the crisis was not only about slavery. Both sides knew it.
The documents say so. They always did.
The Convenient Lie is available now in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle.
